I opened Luma in 2016, in what used to be Alder Street Florist. After eleven years in a busy downtown salon I wanted somewhere slower, where nobody is double-booked and everyone gets a real consultation before the scissors come out.
We still work that way. Five of us, seven chairs, a wash room full of plants and a very good espresso machine.

Nobody here works on commission, so nobody is going to talk you into a treatment you don’t need. Most of us have been here for years.

Hannah spent eleven years behind the chair downtown before opening Luma in a former flower shop on Alder Street. She still takes clients four days a week.

If your balayage grows out beautifully, that was probably Claire. She is our go-to for colour corrections and for talking people out of box dye.

Maya is the reason half the neighbourhood has a bob. Precise, fast and honest about what your hair will actually do at home.

Sasha trained with Hannah for two years before taking her own column. Short hair, clipper work and anything vivid is where she is happiest.

The small print
Not many rules, but these help us keep appointments running on time for everyone.
- Cancelling or moving
- Please give us 24 hours’ notice. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged 50% of the booked service, because someone else could have had that time.
- Running late
- We can usually absorb ten minutes. Any later and we may need to shorten your service or move you to another day.
- Deposits
- Colour appointments over $150 need a $50 deposit when you book. It comes off your bill on the day.
- New colour clients
- We need a quick patch test at least 48 hours before your first colour. Pop in any time we’re open, it takes five minutes.
- Kids
- Cuts for under-12s are $35 with any stylist. Weekend mornings are quietest.
- Not quite right?
- Tell us within seven days and we’ll put it right free of charge. We would much rather hear from you than have you live with it.
