Checkups & cleanings

Most of what we do is here. A thorough cleaning, a proper look at your teeth and gums, and an honest answer about whether anything needs attention (usually it doesn’t).

What to expect

  1. 1 Your hygienist asks about sensitivity, bleeding gums or anything that’s been bothering you.
  2. 2 Low-dose digital X-rays, once a year for most adults.
  3. 3 Scaling and polish. Tell us if you’d like numbing gel; plenty of people do.
  4. 4 Your dentist checks everything, including an oral cancer screening, and talks you through what they see.

The people you’ll see every six months

Dr. Elena Reyes in teal scrubs, smiling with arms crossed

Dr. Elena Reyes, DDS

Founder, general & cosmetic dentistry

Elena grew up four blocks from Alder Street and opened Brightside in 2011 after six years in a busy practice downtown, where she learned how rushed dentistry feels from the patient’s side.

She studied at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and has completed over 400 hours of continuing education in orthodontics and cosmetic work. Outside the office she coaches her daughter’s under-10 soccer team, badly.

Dr. Daniel Aziz in dark scrubs holding dental instruments in a treatment room

Dr. Daniel Aziz, DMD

Implants, crowns & restorative dentistry

Daniel joined in 2018 and brought implant surgery in-house, so patients no longer have to be referred across town. He trained at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and completed a residency in advanced general dentistry.

Patients tend to mention that he explains things twice without making you feel slow. He’s also the reason there’s a very good espresso machine in the staff room.

Dana Whitfield, dental hygienist, smiling in navy scrubs

Dana Whitfield, RDH

Hygienist since 2009. Ask her about her rescue greyhounds.

Marisol Vega, dental hygienist, in blue scrubs and a white coat

Marisol Vega, RDH

Our children’s specialist. Speaks Spanish and fluent seven-year-old.

Plus Tamsin and Joe at the front desk, who will find you a Saturday slot if one exists and remember your kids’ names.

I hadn’t been to a dentist in almost five years because I was embarrassed. Dana didn’t make a single comment about it, and Dr. Reyes showed me the photos and gave me a plan I could afford over a few months.

    Response from the owner

Kristen, thank you for trusting us. See you in March! – Elena

Cracked a molar on a Saturday night. Called Monday at 8, was in the chair at 11. Dr. Aziz had a temporary crown on it before lunch and the permanent one fits perfectly.

Both our kids actually ask when they’re going back. Marisol is magic with nervous little ones and the ceiling TVs are a stroke of genius.

Straightforward pricing, which is rare. They told me what insurance would pay before starting and the bill matched to the dollar.

Questions we hear a lot

I haven’t been to a dentist in years. Is that a problem?

Not at all, and you won’t get a lecture. Your first visit is a conversation and an exam. If there’s work to do, we’ll show you the photos, explain the options and prioritise what matters most.

Do you see children?

Yes, from their first tooth. We recommend a first visit by their first birthday, and we can often book siblings and parents back to back.

I get really anxious. What can you do?

Tell us when you book. We can schedule longer appointments, use numbing gel before any injection, give you a hand signal to pause, and offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for $65.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Please give us 24 hours’ notice so we can offer the time to someone on our waitlist. We don’t charge for the first late cancellation; after that there’s a $50 fee.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Treatment over $600 can be split into interest-free monthly payments over up to 12 months, and we work with third-party financing for larger cases.

Where do I park?

There’s a free lot behind the building with the entrance on Birch Lane, and two accessible spaces by the front door. The number 12 bus stops at Alder & 41st.
